Fashion Store/Webstore Design

Have you ever dreamed of designing a fashion store? Unleash your creativity in this store/webstore design workshop. You’ll be introduced to color, layout, interior design, and responsive design principles to help create alluring store and e-retail designs. You will also get to raid your closet, style looks, and take photos that you will publish in your imaginary webstore design. Let’s design your dream store!


  • You will learn about the fundamental elements and principles of retail store planning.
  • You will create a brand image for your store design.
  • You will research various digital storefront designs to manipulate.
  • You will get to design an imaginary digital storefront

Day 1 -

  • What is visual merchandising?
    • Creative thinking: getting “out of the box”
  • Brand personalities: color, fonts, and design
  • Activity
    • Choose a name for your store
    • Describe merchandise/price point
    • Write a mission statement
    • Create a digital moodboard.

Day 2 -

  • Atmospheric: design and merchandising strategies
  • Photo stylist: user interface design
  • Activity: raid your closet, style looks and take pictures!

Day 3 –

  • Store design: layout and interior design approaches
  • Digital storefronts: user experience design
  • Activity: research various websites to create your digital storefront.

Day 4 –

  • Visual merchandising careers: a creative vision
  • Responsive design: web development approaches
  • Activity: design your digital storefront!

Day 5 –

Imaginary digital storefront design reveal

  • Project: imaginary digital storefront
  • Store image/brand
    • Choose a unique but simple store name
    • Write a mission statement that reflects the essence of your store
    • Define your target market
    • Create a digital moodboard that embodies your stores atmospherics
  • Product/merchandise
    • Describe the type of merchandise
    • Provide price range
  • Photo stylist
    • Create looks by taking pictures of your existing
      • Wardrobe
      • Accessories
  • Website/digital storefront
    • Choose a website platform that complements your store’s atmospherics
      • Ensure it is free to uselike wix or weebly
    • Design your site that complements your store’s brand image
      • User interface
        • Display photo stylist looks
      • User experience
        • Incorporate responsive design
  • Presentation
    • Imaginary digital storefront reveal


Modules will be delivered through zoom-based class discussions, and individual hands-on projects that students can perform at home. No special skills or equipment are required beyond access to a home computer and Internet access. Class sizes will be small (16 maximum) to facilitate inclusion and interaction. 

The program is not for academic credit. On conclusion, students will receive a certificate of completion from the Cal Poly Pomona Huntley College of Agriculture. Each module will run subject to meeting a minimum enrollment.
